VERITAS has developed a masterplan for the Penang Medical and Digital Technology Hub on a strategic 12 hectare site in Batu Kawan for iHeal Health Sdn Bhd.

This development will be a regional hub for medical tourism, healthcare, education and biotechnical industry. A second phase is proposed to provide a range of accommodation and mixed-use commercial development to complement this landmark regional healthcare development.

The Brunel University Health Campus is the product of a strategic partnership between Brunel University London (BUL) and the local primary and acute care agencies to create an integrated health treatment, care, education and research facility on a vacant site between the existing university and the local acute hospital.

The key objective for the university is to create an innovative multi-disciplinary medical school building on the School of Health Sciences facility designed by VERITAS between 2006 and 2009.

The first phase comprises the replacement and re-organisation of the outdated existing Hillingdon District General Hospital, and adding a new tertiary emergency care and diagnostic centre, and new facilities for rehabilitative and step-down care to relieve pressures on hospital beds.

A major new polyclinic wing will create a focus for the new BUL medical school, integrating the existing BUL health training and laboratory centres to support the development of skilled professionals to serve the community.

Harmony Hills Homes is situated in a picturesque valley near Semenyih and has been designed to create an environment that supports the wellbeing of the 288 residents through the application of salutogenic design principles. The physical, emotional & psychological needs of the residents are supported by creating a comfortable residential ambience, with good daylighting, natural ventilation, and views of the surrounding forested hills.

The design follows the best Australian assisted design living principles. The double courtyard design provides an efficient built form that allows the residents to circulate freely and enjoy the gardens and views to the surrounding hills. Ageing-in-place principles enable residents of various care levels and support needs to be accommodated in a non-institutional environment.

This project has been special to VERITAS Architects because it sets a new standard for the assisted living industry in Malaysia and contributes a tangible benefit to the community.

Client: Perak Community Specialist Hospital

VERITAS Architects have developed a strategic Masterplan to upgrade this historic hospital and create a modern state-of-the-art hospital to meet the needs of the Ipoh community.

The masterplan showcases the original heritage art deco building and recreates the structure of the original landscaped forecourt to present the hospital positively to the community.

New facilities necessary to support the ongoing operational needs of this community-based not-for-profit hospital have been designed to allow a staged development of the site with the potential for a significant healthcare wing or assisted living development at the rear of the site.

The first stage, completed in 2022, comprises a new wing that provides a new 90-bed inpatient wing, specialist clinics, imaging department and a modern entry lobby.

Future stages have been masterplanned to provide a new operating theatre complex, ICU & HDU wards, A&E department, dialysis and chemotherapy units.

Refurbishment of the historic 1950’s art-deco building has been undertaken progressively to provide ward accommodation reflecting salutogenic design principles - Landscaped courtyards and breezeways have been incorporated into the design to bring natural day light and ventilation into hospital as part of the environmentally-sustainable design concept.

These new facilities, combined with the upgraded forecourt landscape will restore the grandeur of the original hospital and provide a patient-focused hospital equipped with the latest facilities.

 The new 300-bed Kemaman Hospital will provide a comprehensive modern healthcare facility to serve the needs of the state of Terengganu and wider east coast community. 

The hospital complex, including staff accommodation and hostel facilities, has been designed to occupy only 21 hectares of the 50 hectare site to allow for future expansion of this regional healthcare hub.

Designed to maximise efficiency and minimise the footprint, the hospital comprises 9 floors in a vertical arrangement. This minimises travel distances and optimises operational efficiency. The 4-floor podium supports all critical healthcare activities including a comprehensive A&E department, consulting suites, operating theatres and critical care wards. Daylighting is provided by the incorporation of courtyard spaces. The patient wards are located on the 5 floor tower above the podium to take advantage of the good views, daylighting and natural ventilation.

The primary design goal is to enhance the hospital experience through the adoption of salutogenic design principles. These include the maximization of daylight, easy wayfinding, and the creation of landscaped courtyards to create a patient-friendly healing environment whilst ensuring that operational efficiency is optimised.

VERITAS Architects Kuala Lumpur, VERITAS Interiors and VERITAS Landscape collaborated with VERITAS Architects Australia to design a major expansion of the existing Thomson Hospital to cater for the growth of the hospital and provide a greater range of specialist services.

Located on a highly visible site, the design maximises the prominence of the hospital to optimise exposure to the public. Pedestrian access from the adjoining educational campuses, residential precincts, and the MRT station has been provided.

The expansion programme accommodates four main components – additional specialist clinics, oncology centre, expanded operating theatre complex and signifacntly expanded hospital ward accommodation. A multilevel carpark has been incorporated to accommodate the large carparking requirement. A range of retail and food & beverage outlets provided to support needs of patients, visitors and staff.

The new wing significantly develops the existing clinical services, increases inpatient capacity and critical care facilities from 200 to 400 beds and doubles the number of operating theatres. The new wing also caters to centres of excellence for Cardiac Services and Catheterization, Endoscopy, Chemotherapy, Women’s and Men’s Health, Rehabilitation and Wellness department.

A contemporary rectilinear approach is adopted to create a landmark destination and to express the progressive values of the hospital. Efficient space planning has been applied to ensure a cost-effective design solution that also provides flexibility to cater to future medical services.

The design of the new THDK wing optimises site usage and integrates the existing hospital yet still provides future proofing by allocating part of the remaining site for further development.

Client: River of Life Hospital Sdn Bhd

In 2012 VERITAS was approached to create a landmark healthcare facility on a strategic site situated at the head Kuala Lumpur’s urban redevelopment intuitive, The River of Life. 

The site presented a number of unique design challenges including the negotiation of a direct access link to the DUKE freeway system and the incorporation of the urban design objectives of the River of Life project. 

The resulting design concept takes advantages of the dramatic panoramic views out from the site and incorporates the latest innovations in healthcare planning to create new paradigm in healthcare. The vertically-arranged hospital comprises 300 beds and has a full complement of support services. Environmentally-sustainable design initiatives have been incorporated to reduce energy consumption and salutogenic design principles such as the provision of ample daylighting, logical wayfinding and external views have been applied to create an attractive, functionally efficient and healthy environment for the patients, visitors and clinical staff.

The hospital is strategically located 2KM north of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre and has good access from the DUKE ring road. The site is on the banks of the Gombak River, which affords panoramic vistas across the water from the lower levels.

The hospital design incorporates the latest developments in healthcare planning and environmentally sustainable design. The constraints of this site required an unorthodox design approach which results in a vertically structured healthcare facility that still optimises operational efficiency.

Realizing the ‘River of Life’ urban design initiatives, a retail component interfaces the river and the surrounding neighbourhood. This begins as a public thoroughfare that connects from street level to the riverfront on the other side of the building with retail outlets and cafes, presenting a more engaging interface with the neighbourhood than a traditional hospital. The significant changes in level from riverfront to street-front become an opportunity to create a dramatic transition space in the form of a double volume atrium that opens up to the sky garden. The podium is a series of vertically arranged car parking and healthcare facilities spaces and includes a dramatic sky lobby which serves as the main reception level of the hospital. This approach preserves the integrity of the riverfront, and affords vistas of the Gombak river to arrivals at the hospital.

VERITAS Architects Australia provided project management services to this leading aged care provider for their flagship project, the Coppin Centre, Melbourne. 

Design consultancy was also provided for the upgrading of existing facilities on the site to bring them in line with the quality of the new wing. This work was also completed in 2013. 

In 2015 Veritas Architects, in collaboration with Visionbuilt Solutions, undertook the retrofitting of the third floor administration wing to create the luxury Coppin Suites, 16 luxury assisted living apartments which provide a hybrid between independent living and aged care accommodation.

Status: Completed 2006

VERITAS Architects, in association with Thomson Adsett international healthcare planners, undertook the design and renovations of the existing hospital to add a wing and renovate the existing hospital.

The new wing comprises 90 inpatient beds, ICU & HDU wards, a new operating theatre complex, specialist clinics, support services, public spaces and a multi-storeys carpark. The 1950’s façade was given an update but preserved the character of the historic building.

The project involved complex programming, staging, decanting and project management to enable the continued operation of the hospital during the construction of the new facilities and then the renovation of the existing hospital.
